It is the northernmost municipality in the province of Brescia and is the second most populous municipality in Alta Val Camonica after Edolo. Four valleys converge towards Ponte di Legno: two from the north (Valle delle Messi and Valle di Viso) and two from the south (Val Sozzine and Val Bione).

The climate of Ponte di Legno is distinctly alpine, characterized by long, very cold and snowy winters and short, cool summers. Summer can, therefore, be considered a respite after the big winter cold; only in the terrible summer of 2003 did the thermometer reach +27 °C.

Ponte di Legno: tourism in the Alps

History of Ponte di Legno

In 774 AD, the donation document of Valle Camonica by Charlemagne to the monastery of San Martino di Tours (Marmoutier Abbey) indicates the northernmost part of the valley as ''Dalanias''. In the medieval and modern era, the name becomes ''Daligno'' or ''Dalegno''. In the Venetian era (1428-1797) one of the administrative divisions of the Valle Camonica was composed of the two non-bordering communities of Borno and Dalegno.

Around the year 1000, the mother church of the Dalegno community, that of San Martino di Villa Dalegno, obtained the faculty of having a baptistery.
