History
The territory of the current Capiago Intimiano was inhabited since ancient times. The fusion of two separate municipalities, Capiago and Intimiano, occurred in 1928. During the Middle Ages, Capiago supported Frederick Barbarossa, while Intimiano was within the sphere of influence of Milan. Capiago belongs to the Diocese of Como and follows the Roman rite, while Intimiano, belonging to the Archdiocese of Milan, follows the Ambrosian rite.
History of Capiago
The first settlements of Capiago were in a lazaretto located near the current washhouse. In the Statutes of Como of 1335, Capiago was listed among the municipalities of the Zezio Parish. In 1751, the territory of Capiago included Cassina Franca and other villages. In 1807, Capiago and Uniti were annexed to the municipality of Montorfano, but the merger was later abolished after the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte and the transfer of Lombardy to the Habsburg Empire.
Physical geography
Capiago Intimiano is located about 8 km from Como towards the southeast. The uninhabited areas are predominantly wooded, in what remains one of the extensions of the Spina Verde. The church of San Carlo is located in the hamlet of Olmeda, culturally linked to Capiago.
History of Intimiano
The discovery, in the locality of Mandana, of a series of Roman tombs accompanied by Gallic objects attests that the current territory of Intimiano was inhabited since ancient times.
