The territory of Capena extends for 29.51 km² from north to south, between the Via Flaminia and the Via Tiberina, from the Bivio di Capannelle area up to 210 m above sea level. The town is located on various hills with an average altitude of 160 m, originated from river terraces of the Tiber Valley. If you move to the north, you will find Le Macchie, the countryside of Capena, where numerous vineyards and olive groves produce the famous local wine called "Castellaccio".

Climate

The climate of Capena is classified as zone D, 1747 GR/G. During winter, temperatures can vary considerably depending on the altitude. However, in the lower areas, the humidity provided by the Tiber river makes winter mornings very cold (up to -5 degrees), while afternoon temperatures can reach up to 15 degrees. Instead, in the higher areas, the minimum temperature is mild and the maximum slightly colder. During summer, maximum temperatures are very high throughout the territory, with values that can reach 40 degrees during the months of July and August. The prevailing winds blow from the north and west, while winter begins with the arrival of the tramontana, usually around December.

History

Archaic era

The archaic city of Capena was located on the Civitucola hill, the main center of the Capenati. The Capenati were a flourishing people who prospered in the Tiber Valley before the advent of Rome. Their culture had its own aspects, influenced by Etruscan, Latin and Sabine culture. The language spoken by the Capenati was similar to Latin but with influences from the Osco-Umbrian and Faliscan language.

According to Roman tradition, the city was founded by the Veienti Etruscans or by an Etruscan king named Propertius. The Capenate territory, called "Ager Capenas" during the Roman period, extended along the right bank of the Tiber and included many municipalities of the current region. The proximity to the Tiber allowed numerous economic and cultural exchanges since the Bronze Age.

The main inhabited centers of the time were Capena, on the Civitucola hill, Castellaccio, the Lucus Feroniae, an important center of worship and trade and the city of Saperna, whose exact location is still unknown.

Conclusion

Capena is a place of great historical and cultural richness. Its hills, the Tiber river and the surrounding countryside create a picturesque and welcoming environment. If you have the opportunity to visit Capena, do not forget to discover its history and hidden treasures. Bon voyage!
