Physical geography

Borgo Carìge is located in the southernmost part of Maremma Grossetana, a very suggestive area of Tuscany, known as Costa d'Argento, because of the golden color of the sand of its beaches. The hamlet is located about 21 meters above sea level, in a flat area at the foot of Monteti hill, and borders Capalbio, Pescia Fiorentina, Capalbio Scalo and Giardino. It is crossed by the Carige stream, which originates near the village and flows into the Bassa canal.

History

The hamlet of Borgo Carìge was founded during the 20th century, thanks to the reclamation of Maremma plain and the agrarian reform started in 1951. The area was sparsely populated, but it was chosen for the construction of a village that was supposed to serve about four hundred farms scattered in a rural area of 5000 hectares between Capalbio and the sea. The original nucleus of the village included eight buildings, including a church, a cinema, a school and a post office and clinic.

Monuments and places of interest

The Church of the Immaculate Heart is Borgo Carìge's main monument. It is located in the main square of the village and was designed by Riccardo Medici, brother of the then president of the Maremma Authority, Giuseppe Medici. The church was inaugurated in 1958 and features a modern and linear style.

How to get there

Borgo Carìge is located about 55 km from Grosseto and just over 5 km from the municipal capital of Capalbio. You can reach the village by car following the Aurelia state road (exit Capalbio) or by train thanks to the Capalbio Scalo railway station.
