San Giorgio di Livenza is a locality located in the municipality of Caorle, in the province of Venice. The place is located on the right bank of the Livenza river, and here is also located La Salute di Livenza di San Stino di Livenza. San Giorgio di Livenza is a fraction of the municipality, and is located in a particular position, as the banks of the Brian canal, which flows south of the town center, belong to the municipality of San Stino di Livenza up to the Brian locality.
The history of San Giorgio di Livenza dates back to ancient times, being home to an ancient chapel. However, the town has developed recently following the agricultural reclamation that has affected Eastern Veneto.
The Parish Church of San Giorgio di Livenza
The parish church is one of the most important monuments of San Giorgio di Livenza. Originally, the church was a modest oratory, but was rebuilt in the first half of the 18th century. In 1926, following an agreement between the diocesan curia, the parish priest don Antonio Mattana, the Regia bonifica Ongaro Inferiore, and the Romiati family, landowners, the church was demolished to allow the Brian canal to be raised. The church was rebuilt in another location, on a plot of land belonging to the Romiati family. It was opened for worship on September 29, 1929, and the definitive consecration took place in 1934 by Bishop Eugenio Beccegato.
The parish church of San Giorgio di Livenza is also interesting from a historical-artistic point of view. The sacred building features a baroque architectural style, with two symmetrical bell towers and a stone-facing facade. Inside, numerous works of art are preserved, including paintings of considerable value, such as the Cena in Emmaus, dating back to the 17th century.
