Territory

The territory of Turin extends across the plain delimited by the Stura di Lanzo, Sangone, and Po rivers. The Po river runs through the city from south to north. Turin faces the mouth of several alpine valleys, including the Susa Valley, which allows it to connect with France through the Frejus tunnels, the Frejus railway tunnel, and the Frejus road tunnel. History

Turin has a two-thousand-year history, having been founded around the 3rd century BC by the Taurini, a Celtic population. Subsequently, the city was transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus, under the name of Iulia Augusta Taurinorum in the 1st century BC. Torino has been dominated by several powers over the centuries, including the Ostrogoths and Lombards.

Turin then became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin and subsequently, after having been the capital of the Marca of Turin, passed under the lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century. In 1563 it became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy. From 1720 it became the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (1720-1861) (although only ''de facto'' until the perfect fusion of 1847, when it also became formal). Turin was the first capital (city) of the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946) from the Unification of Italy until 1865.

Economy

Turin is one of Italy's major industrial and university centers, as well as an important cultural and tourist center. It is an integral part of the Metropolitan Area of Turin, which has about 1.7 million inhabitants. The economy of Turin is one of the most important in the country. At the end of the years of the Italian economic miracle, together with Milan and Genoa, it composed the industrial triangle. Today, Turin is the third industrial pole in the country. The city is renowned as the birthplace of some of the greatest symbols of "Made in Italy" in the world, including vermouth, Gianduiotto, breadsticks, and espresso coffee.

Turin is also the hub of the Italian automotive industry and publishing. Banks and insurance companies, information technology, cinema, enogastronomy, industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence are other sectors in which Turin boasts internationally recognized excellence.

Art and culture

Turin is a city rich in history, art, and culture. The city hosted the 1911 International Exposition of Turin and the 2006 Winter Olympics. In 2021, it becomes the venue for the ATP Finals.

Within its territory, there are areas and buildings included in two goods protected by UNESCO. Certain palaces and areas belonging to the circuit of Savoy residences in Piedmont are a World Heritage Site. The Po Hills area is instead a biosphere reserve. Turin is also an important university center, with several universities and research centers in various sectors of excellence.
