Gaggiolo

Gaggiolo: the story of a unique town

Hello! Today, I want to tell you about a very special town called Gaggiolo. This town is located on the border between Italy and Switzerland, and is divided into two parts: one belongs to the municipality of Cantello in Italy, the other belongs to Stabio in Switzerland. The border between the two parts is marked by the Gaggiolo pass, which serves as an international customs point.

History

The name "Gaggiolo" comes from the word "gahagi", which means "enclosure" or "fenced field" in Lombard language. The history of this town dates back to the time of the Roman Empire, when some troops settled here with a camp. Later, Gaggiolo became an aggregation of farms and agricultural estates. This area was part of the Duchy of Milan until 1512, when the territory of Canton Ticino passed to Switzerland and the current national border was created. The church of S. Bernardino was built before the creation of the border, but it was never a proper parish. The small church is famous for the numerous frescoes by the Ligurian painter Carlo Coquio.

Infrastructure and transport

The Gaggiolo customs point is very important for trade between Italy and Switzerland, and the Cantello-Gaggiolo railway station is located on the Mendrisio-Varese line.

Notes

If you intend to cross the border at Gaggiolo, please note that there may be customs checks and you must have the proper documentation.
