The territory of Canosa Sannita is located on a hill between the valleys of the Venna and Sant'Onofrio streams, between the Adriatic Sea and the Maiella massif. History

Canosa Sannita boasts a millennial history. In the 9th century, the two Fara (Longobards) owned by the noble Longobardo Maione were ceded to the abbey of Montecassino. In the 13th century, the castle of Canosa was owned by Guglielmo di San Giuliano, "justice of Abruzzo." Later, the castle passed into the hands of the "vicesecretary" of Abruzzo and is mentioned in a document of King Charles I of Anjou. In the 16th century, the fiefdom of Canosa came under the dominion of Emanuel de Vega following the rebellion of Lanciano against Emperor Charles V of Habsburg. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Canosa Sannita was one of the Monte Frumentario, institutions of grain and cereal lending for nearby villages, which assisted about three hundred people.

Curiosities about the municipality of Canosa Sannita

The fiefdom of Canosa was divided into eight "fractionations," each of which had a lord at its head. Canosa Sannita was affected by the phenomenon of brigandage during the Risorgimento, with the presence in the territory of the brigand Nunziato Mecola. During World War II, Canosa Sannita was bombed by the Allies and the Nazis fleeing from Ortona, causing the almost complete loss of the historic center incorporated around a castle.
