Hi everyone!

Today we will talk about Turin, a truly special city. Turin is located in Piedmont, a region in northern Italy, and is the capital of both the Region and the Metropolitan City of Turin. The city has a population of 842,472 people (as of October 31, 2022) and is the fourth most populous municipality in Italy. Along with its metropolitan area, which has about 1.7 million inhabitants, Turin is the third-largest complex of economics and industrial production in the country.

History

Foundation and past

Turin has a two-thousand-year history. It was founded around the 3rd century BCE by the Taurines and later transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name "Iulia Augusta Taurinorum" in the 1st century BCE. After the Ostrogothic domination, it became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin and then, after becoming the capital of the Marca di Torino, it passed under the nominal lordship of the Savoy family in the 11th century. In 1563, Turin became the capital of the Duchy of Savoy.

Turin: history, geography, economy, and culture in a global city.

Modern and contemporary age

From 1720, Turin became the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia (1720-1861) and later, in the 19th century, it led to the Italian Risorgimento. In 1861, Turin became the first capital (city) of the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946) until 1865. The city has hosted important international events such as the International Exhibition in 1911 and the XX Winter Olympic Games in 2006. In 2022, Turin also hosted the Eurovision Song Contest.

Physical geography

Territory

Turin is located in the plain bounded by the rivers Stura di Lanzo, Sangone and Po and facing the mouth of some alpine valleys such as Val di Susa, Valli di Lanzo and Val Sangone. The Po River runs through the city from south to north.

Protected areas

In the territory of Turin, there are some areas and buildings included in two UNESCO-protected goods. These are some palaces and areas belonging to the circuit of Savoy Residences in Piedmont (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the area of the Po hills (a Biosphere Reserve).

Economy and culture

Industry

Turin is the hub of the Italian automotive industry, the center of publishing, banking and insurance, information technology, cinema, enogastronomy, the space sector, industrial design, sports, fashion, and artificial intelligence.

Culture and tourism

Turin is an important hub for university, art, tourism, science, and Italian culture. The city is the birthplace of the famous vermouth, Gianduiotti, breadsticks, and espresso coffee. Additionally, its constant growth in international importance has allowed Turin to rank as a global city (the third Italian city after Milan and Rome) in the "Gamma" category.

I hope I've introduced this magnificent city to you a little better! See you next time!
