Canevino: a small hamlet with a great history

Canevino is a small hamlet in the province of Pavia, Lombardy, with only 108 inhabitants. However, its history dates back to ancient times and its cultural importance has been recognized over the centuries. In this article, we will discover the history, symbols, monuments, and community of this fascinating hamlet.

History

The origin of Canevino dates back to 816 when one of its inhabitants donated part of his properties in the surrounding territory. Over the centuries, Canevino went through the rule of different noble families until it was incorporated into the Republic of Pavia in 1164. Despite being dependent on other local lordships, Canevino maintained its own cultural identity and, due to its strategic position, was an important locality for the passage of pilgrims and traders.

In 1936, Canevino was merged with another nearby locality to form the municipality of Pometo. However, in 1947, the municipality of Canevino was reconstituted and continued to exist until 2018 when it was decided by referendum to merge with the municipalities of Ruino and Valverde to form the new municipality of Colli Verdi.
