Canepina

Welcome to Canepina, in the Heart of Lazio

Hello everyone! Today, I will talk about Canepina, a municipality of 2907 inhabitants located in the province of Viterbo, in Lazio. The name of this town comes from the word "hemp," and in the 17th century, it was just a vast plantation of this crop. But Canepina has a long history behind it, and many places of interest to discover.

A Territory Characterized by Mountains and Hills

The territory of Canepina is characterized by a hilly and mountainous landscape, with cultivations of chestnut fruit, hazelnuts, and olive trees interspersed throughout the area. Rivers are not lacking, including the Ripa stream, which crosses the entire village. The streets of the historic center are paved with basaltic rock slabs, creating a unique atmosphere. The climate is classified as zone E, with 2309 GR/G.

Canepina: history, mountains and historical churches.

The History of Canepina

The history of Canepina begins in the 11th century when the powerful Prefetti di Vico family built a castle to watch over the Tiber plain. In 1154, the castle was purchased by Adrian IV, becoming a property of St. Peter. The cultivation of hemp characterized the territory, which passed under the dominion of Viterbo in 1174 and the Holy See in 1332. In 1544 the castle became part of the new state created by Paul III, remaining there until 1649. In 1944, Canepina suffered an allied bombing that caused the death of 115 people.

Places of Interest

Canepina boasts numerous monuments and places of interest, including its historic churches. The collegiate church of Santa Maria Assunta, built in the Middle Ages and renovated in the 15th-16th century, is the main church of the town. The church of San Michele Arcangelo, adjacent to the museum, presents interesting works of art. The church of Santa Corona, dedicated to the patron saint of the town, dates back to the 1200s. The church of Madonna delle Grazie is a small Renaissance church, leaning against a steep slope. Finally, the church of San Giuseppe completes the panorama of Canepina's historic churches.

Among the civil buildings, the Farnese Palace stands out, erected in the 16th century and now the seat of the municipal offices in Garibaldi Square.
