Canelli

Welcome to Canelli: the city of wine and UNESCO

Hello everyone! Are you ready to embark on a journey through the beautiful hills of Canelli? This splendid city in Piedmont, located in the south of the province of Asti, is famous not only for being a productive and cultural reality, but also for its vineyard landscape. In fact, in 2014, Canelli and Asti Spumante were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, becoming an integral part of the Landscape of Piemonte: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato.

The geography of Canelli

Canelli is located in the heart of the historical region of Astesana, on the first opening of the Belbo valley, which separates it from Langhe. 70% of the municipality's territory is located on hills, with a maximum altitude of about 500 meters above sea level and a minimum of about 150 meters above sea level along the Belbo stream. The most important waterway is the Belbo, which in the past caused frequent floods. Nevertheless, despite its proximity to the Piedmont hills, Canelli has a mild climate, protected from the cold winds, thanks to the village of Cassinasco.

The history of Canelli

The territory of Canelli has been inhabited since Prehistory, when the Liguri Statielli founded numerous settlements. During the Roman Empire, a center of viticulture developed and numerous findings from the Roman era demonstrate the presence of this activity. However, after the fall of the Roman Empire, Canelli underwent a long period of decline, until the High Middle Ages when the city flourished. In 961 it was defined as a "civitas" and towards the middle of the 11th century, the descendants of the Counts of Acqui settled there, taking on lordship and preaching. Later, in 1235, the lords of the consortium submitted to the Astese Republic, which followed the historical events of Astesana until today.
