Candiana: A Small Municipality in Veneto

Candiana is a small municipality located in the province of Padua, in the Veneto region. With a population of approximately 2,230 inhabitants, Candiana is situated south of the provincial capital. The city has an ancient and interesting history dating back to 1097. In this article, we will explore the history, culture, economy, and administration of Candiana.

Etymology

The name Candiana probably derives from the proper name "Candidus" with the addition of the suffix "ana," which means "village" or "farm." There are several popular legends about the origin of the city's name, but all are unfounded and unreliable.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Candiana is famous for its Church of San Michele Arcangelo, built in 1502 by the architect Lorenzo da Bologna. The church is surrounded by the former monastery of the regular canons of Sant'Agostino, founded in 1462 and important for the agricultural development of the territory. The monastery was later suppressed in 1783, and the property passed to the Albrizzi family. The church is known as the "countryside cathedral" for its monumentality and for the many works of art it houses, including those of artists such as Morlaiter and Mengozzi Colonna.

In 1938, the city underwent an urban redevelopment by the architect Quirino De Giorgio, who designed several buildings such as the town hall, the party house, the textile and spinning laboratory, and the Littorio village, now known as Via Borgo.
