Candela
Candela: a small town in Puglia
Candela, also known as "Cannéla" in local dialects, is a town in the province of Foggia in Puglia, with about 2,500 inhabitants. Located on two hills called San Rocco and San Tommaso, it is part of the southern Dauni mountains and is situated between the Carapelle and Ofanto rivers. The municipal territory hosts the end of the Pescasseroli-Candela drover's road, a grassy path used for transhumance. The climate of the area is characterized by fairly marked temperature fluctuations and scarce rainfall.
A brawl that marked history
September 8, 1902 remains a sad day in the history of Candela. During a strike by local laborers, a brawl broke out between the protesters and the carabinieri escorting a wagon with corndecoy. The military opened fire on the peasants, killing eight people and injuring 20 others. After the shooting, there were numerous arrests, including that of the Magaldi league leader.
The church of San Tommaso apostolo
The church of San Tommaso apostolo is one of the main monuments of Candela, dating back to the first millennium and located within the municipal territory.
Festivals and events
Every year in Candela, San Rocco is celebrated from August 16 to 18, with celebrations and musical events. Additionally, on May 16-17-18, the 32nd Puglia & Lucania Rally is held, an automobile race valid for the Central European Championship and for the Italian Rally Terra and Cross Country Rally Championships.
Economy, infrastructure and transport
In the Palino area, north of the Calaggio stream, there are numerous wells for the extraction of fossil hydrocarbons. Candela has an exit on the A16 motorway, a railway station on the Foggia-Potenza line, and the 655 Bradanica State Road that crosses it.
