Cancellara
Welcome to Cancellara, a small town with a rich history!
Cancellara, affectionately known as ''Cangeddàre'' by its inhabitants, is an Italian municipality located in the province of Potenza, in the region of Basilicata. Its northern location makes it very suggestive; in fact, it stands at 680 meters above sea level, surrounded by the municipalities of Oppido Lucano, Vaglio Basilicata, Acerenza, Pietragalla, and Tolve.
A territory rich in natural beauty
In Cancellara, visitors can admire a true spectacle of nature: in the locality of ''Bòfete'', it is possible to see some small mud volcanoes that represent a true treasure for the fauna and flora of the area.
A cultural heritage to discover
Cancellara's territory preserves a cultural heritage of inestimable value, which can be appreciated through a visit to the historic center and the surrounding districts. The historical evidence of archaeological, architectural, artistic, and productive periods is multiple and of great interest to all history enthusiasts.
In particular, the Castle of Cancellara is a work of great value, but the churches present in the area are also worth a visit. Among them, we mention the Mother Church of Santa Maria del Carmine, built-in 1520, the Church of Santa Caterina di Alessandria, the Church of San Rocco, and the Church and Convent of the Santissima Annunziata. Even the monumental stone fountains, the entrance gates to the village, and the portals from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries represent an interesting testimony of period art and architecture.
In general, the historic center is entirely made of stone and is still almost intact today, although in some points, it has a state of degradation due to the low population density.
The Cancellara society
Cancellara currently has around 1155 inhabitants, and its population has gradually grown over the years. Thanks to the commitment and determination of its residents, the municipality has managed to maintain its traditions and culture intact, becoming a reference point for the entire region.
A municipality dedicated to culture
Culture is an essential element of life in Cancellara, and its passion for cinema is evidenced by the numerous films and documentaries shot in the area. Among these, we mention ''Documentary Ricordi di Pietra. Storie di memoria popolare'' (2017), by Giovanni Salvatore, entirely shot in Cancellara, which tells the story of the Castle of Cancellara and the people who frequented it over the years. Other films such as ''Road to Myself'' (2018), by Alessandro Piva, and ''Time perspectives'' (2019) by Ciro Sorrentino chose Cancellara as a location for some scenes.
Culture in Cancellara is also manifested through the Don Giuseppe Libutti Library, founded in 1976.
The cuisine of Cancellara
Lastly, one cannot talk about Cancellara without mentioning its famous sausage called ''a catena,'' made with pork meat but also with cereals, legumes, and extra-virgin olive oil. This typical product of the area has a characteristic ring shape and is famous throughout the region.
In conclusion, Cancellara is a municipality with great potential, where nature, culture, and tradition merge into a unique entity capable of providing an unforgettable experience to its visitors.
