Canale d'Agordo: between valleys and breathtaking peaks.

Hydrography

The main watercourses are the Biois stream, which flows along the homonymous valley, and the Liera stream, which is its right tributary, coming from the Garés Valley. Thanks to these water resources, hydroelectric power is produced by the Canale d'Agordo plant (1029 kW "Consorzio BIM Piave") and the Cencenighe plant (15506 kW "ENEL SpA").

Origin of the name

The name of Canale d'Agordo, which has been used since 1964, derives from the term "canale", which in this area of the Eastern Alps indicates a valley or a valley stretch. How curious!

History

Here in Canale d'Agordo, traces of its ancient history can be found. In fact, the first evidence of the existence of the village dates back to a document from 1185, where it was mentioned along with the San Simon di Vallada church, then called San Simon di Canale. And around the 14th century, mining activity began in the iron, lead and mercury quarries of Sass Négher and Sàis, mountains in the Garés Valley. In this way, the forges were born to melt metals in the locations "I Forn" and "Medevàl", and so Canale became the second important mining center in the Agordino area after Agordo. In the 19th century, tourism began to expand with the creation of the first hotel "Al Gallo" in the Val del Biois.

Symbols and Honors

The flag of Canale d'Agordo is a white banner. In addition, Canale d'Agordo is among the cities decorated for Military Valor for the Liberation War, awarded the bronze medal for military valor for the sacrifices of its populations including the massacre of the Biois Valley and for the activity in the partisan struggle during the Second World War: a tragic event that still reminds us not to forget our history.
