Lake Campotosto: A Natural Gem of Abruzzo

Lake Campotosto is a wonderful place located in the province of L'Aquila, in Abruzzo. It is the largest artificial lake in the region, covering an area of 1400 hectares with a maximum depth of about 30-35 meters.

History

Lake Campotosto has a very interesting history. During the Ice Age, it had the shape of a double Y. Over time, these shapes transformed into a riverbed where the Rio Fucino currently flows.

In the 1930s and 1940s, three dams were built to create the artificial lake. The goal was to use the lake water to power hydroelectric plants located in the Vomano Valley. The creation of the artificial lake gave the lake the shape of a V, with the two branches named after the main towns located along its banks: Campotosto and Mascioni.

Description

Lake Campotosto is located at an altitude of 1313 meters above sea level and is part of the Vomano River basin. It is also part of the Natural Reserve of Lake Campotosto, established in 1984 to protect the natural environment and the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park.

The lake is entirely bordered by the 577 State Road of Lake Campotosto and is crossed by a section of the Gran Sasso Horse Trail, a cycle path, and a hiking route that crosses the Gran Sasso d'Italia.

Characteristics of the Lake

Lake Campotosto was created thanks to the construction of three dams: the Sella Pedicate dam to the south, the Rio Fucino dam to the east, and the Poggio Cancelli dam to the northwest. Thanks to the difference in height of about 300 meters, the lake is able to supply the Providence hydroelectric plant, the San Giacomo plant, and the Montorio plant with water.

The reservoir is also fed by two gutter channels placed at the western and eastern ends of the lake.

Activities on the Lake

Lake Campotosto offers numerous activities for tourists. It is possible to go hiking, walks along the cycle path, fishing, and water sports such as kayaking and windsurfing. There are also restaurants and bars that offer food and drinks with a panoramic view of the lake.

Lake Campotosto is one of the most beautiful places in Abruzzo. Its history, characteristics, and the activities it offers make it a perfect place for a day trip or vacation. If you are looking for a peaceful place, surrounded by nature, and with numerous activities to do, Lake Campotosto is the ideal choice.
