The history of Camporosso

Of Roman origin, the name Camporosso derives from the Latin language campus rubeus, which referred to the red Nerium oleander forests along the banks of the Nervia stream. The territory was the subject of some battles throughout history, due to its proximity to Ventimiglia. In the fifteenth century, Camporosso and other neighboring communities gained importance when the municipality of Ventimiglia made some government decisions. In the sixteenth century, to prevent the raids of the Saracens, the territory was surrounded by defensive walls and the three entrances to the old village (now demolished) were built. In 1686, Camporosso became part of the "ville" eastern of Ventimiglia and gave birth to the Magnifica Community of the Eight Places, a confederation of villages governed by "chapters of good government."
