Nuova Cliternia: a small town with unique charm
Located in the province of Campobasso, in Molise, Nuova Cliternia is a village of the municipality of Campomarino with a population of approximately 450 inhabitants. However, together with the other villages in the district of Nuova Cliternia, the population rises to around 1200, spread over the land, with one main inhabited center about 7 km from the communal capital.
The resident population includes people from the middle and high Molise, Abruzzo, and several native Cliternini. Its history and origins are totally different from the Albanian (Arbëreshë) language of Campomarino. The territory is located between the Biferno River to the north and the Fortore River to the south, just north of the Saccione stream, which marks the border between Molise and Puglia. The climate is Mediterranean and the territory is within the C climatic zone.
Physical geography
The territory of Nuova Cliternia extends over a predominantly flat area that favors agriculture, in the altitude of the coastal hill. The climate is mitigated by sea breezes during the summer and temperate during the winter. The territory is classified as low seismic risk; however, following the Molise earthquake in 2002, numerous anti-seismic regulations were introduced to avoid the re-emergence of situations already identified during the aforementioned earthquake that affected much of Molise.
History
Cliternia Frentana
There are several interpretations of the history of Nuova Cliternia. Some consider Cliternia to have been a very important Frentana city during the Roman Empire, destroyed by a tsunami or continuous wars. Others believe that Cliternia was certainly included in the Frentani territory, but only as a small settlement erected by pilgrims and refugees from various neighboring areas. Over time, these settlements became more occasional until they disappeared altogether. Historians refer to it as Cliternia Frentana to distinguish it from other Cliternia, such as the case of Cliternia Equicola located near the Salto River.
The birth of "Nuova" Cliternia
All hypotheses regarding the history of Nuova Cliternia come to the conclusion that Nuova Cliternia sees its birth at the beginning of the 20th century, regardless of past historical events. The habitat of Nuova Cliternia was formed in the 1920s of the 20th century, with houses built by Fascism.
