The medieval nucleus of the town is located on a hill at 819 meters above sea level, making it actually the highest capital of a Region (Italy) located in Italy after Enna.

Origin of the name
According to historian Emmanuele Viggiano, the name of the city would derive from the ancient Greeks, who saw the settlement located on the banks of the Basento River and would have attributed it the same name as the river, namely ''Potizo''. The word in Latin would have become ''Potentia'', from which the current name would derive.
Potenza: history
Roman city
The origin of the city of Potenza dates back to the Roman period, when they built a military camp in the area to defend the Appia-Traiana itinerary. During the Middle Ages, the city experienced rapid development thanks to the presence of a strong castle, which became the center of a powerful feud.
Modern city
While many Italian cities suffered destruction during World War II, Potenza remained practically intact. This led to a radical change in its urban appearance, thanks to the new constructions of modern buildings. Today, the city is known for its modern architecture, which constitutes a contrast with the magnificent medieval historic center.
