Campogalliano

Welcome to Campogalliano

Hello everyone! Are you ready to discover a new town in the province of Modena? Today, I will be talking about Campogalliano, a commune with almost 9,000 inhabitants located to the west of the provincial capital. Get ready to immerse yourself in its millenary history, from ancient Celtic settlements to Este domination and partisan resistance.

Campogalliano: History, Art, and Taste in an Emilian Town.

History

Foundation

The history of Campogalliano starts with the descent of the Gauls into the Po Valley. The name of the locality, which means "Field of the Gauls", derives from their settlement near the Secchia river. Subsequently, the territory of the Boi Gauls was annexed to the Roman province of Gallia Cisalpina, of which it became the fulcrum.

Este domination

But the real expansion of Campogalliano occurred thanks to Este domination. In the sixteenth century, the "Castrum", a castle wanted by the junior branch of the Este## Marquises and Princes of San Martino in Rio, was built. Although it no longer exists today, the site of this ancient castle corresponds to the park "Le Montagnole". The morphology of the terrain presupposed the existence of a moat, still visible today. During this period, the oratory of San Rocco and the church of Sant'Orsola, the patron saint of Campogalliano, were also built.

20th century

The population of Campogalliano participated in the Italian resistance during the Second World War and played an important role as a communication link between the partisan lines in the mountains and those on the plain. Today, you can see the Resistance monument, a work by Ettore De Conciliis. In 1980, the territory of Campogalliano extended beyond the oratory of Sant'Orsola and the floodgates of the Secchia river were built in collaboration with the municipalities of Rubiera and Modena. Finally, in 1987, the "Bugatti Automobiles S." plant was built on a land close to the Brenner motorway.

What to see in Campogalliano

In addition to the evidence of its millenary history, Campogalliano offers many other attractions. You can start with the Palazzo Baronale, built in 1500 and located in the center of Piazza Castello. Also, do not miss the church of Sant'Orsola, with its bell tower and red brick façade. For lovers of contemporary art, I recommend a visit to the Visual Arts Center, which organizes exhibitions and events of great cultural interest.

Events in Campogalliano

If you are looking for traditional events and manifestations, Campogalliano will not disappoint you. The town celebrates its patron saint with a festival held every year on October 22nd. Also, within the "Sale, Burro e Fichi" gastronomic festival held in September, you can taste the local specialties.

What to eat in Campogalliano

Speaking of cuisine, I can only recommend some typical dishes of Campogalliano. Among these, there are the tortellini of Campogalliano, a variant of the famous Emilian dish, and the sbrisolona, a cake with a rustic and genuine flavor.

Conclusions

Here we are at the end of our visit to Campogalliano. I hope I have been helpful in introducing you to this splendid Emiliana town. Whether you are interested in history, art, or good food, Campogalliano is definitely the right place for you. I am waiting for you here for a new adventure together!
