With a population of about 2,664 inhabitants, this delightful place offers a perfect holiday getaway away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Located in the west of the Caltanissetta province, Campofranco borders the municipalities of Aragona, Casteltermini, Grotte, Milena (Italy), and Sutera. It is 34 km from Agrigento, 55 km from Caltanissetta and 96 km from Enna.

The History of Campofranco

The history of Campofranco dates back to 1549, when the Del Campo family lost their barony of Mussomeli due to a series of misfortunes related to the name of Cesare Lanza. The Del Campo Baron remained in possession of only four fiefs, including Lo Zubbio, Castelmauro, San Biagio, and Fontana di Rose. In 1573, Philip II of Spain gave permission to the Del Campo family to build a village and name it Campofranco. The name "Campo" derives from the young knight Giovanni del Campo, while "franco" derives from the franchises, tax exemptions, and free lands that were granted to the peasants and artisans who went to the balcony of the Funtana di li Rosi fief.

The first inhabitants of Campofranco were Sutera vassals. Over time, the village has developed with the construction of important public buildings such as the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista, the oven, the slaughterhouse, the fondaco, and other shops. In 1625, Fabrizio Lucchesi Palli obtained the title of prince of Campofranco from Philip IV.
