Santo Stefano

Santo Stefano Fraction in the Municipality of Campobasso

Hi everyone! Today we will talk about Santo Stefano, the only fraction of the Municipality of Campobasso, located in Molise. This small village is 7.21 km away from the Municipality of Campobasso and is connected thanks to the Provincial Road 90.

History of Santo Stefano

The history of Santo Stefano is linked to the figure of Amedeo VI of Savoy, called ''the Green Count’’. He, after coming to the aid of Luigi II D'Angiò, decided to settle in the village of Santo Stefano, along with his army and his guards. He died of the plague here on March 1, 1383.

Monuments and Places of Interest

If you pass through these parts, I recommend you to visit the conventual church of Santa Maria di Loreto. The current church was built in 1890 and completed in 1922. It replaced the previous one, built in the 18th century and destroyed following the landslide of 1902. Inside, there are a painting by an unknown author depicting the Virgin of Sorrows, the statues of the Virgin of Sorrows, St. Stephen, and St. Lucy, and a crucifix from the 15th century.

The village of Santo Stefano has been strongly influenced by historical events, reflected in the architecture and urban planning of the historic center. In addition, Santo Stefano belongs to the category of enclaves and exclaves of Italy, as well as the Fractions of Campobasso.

Here is a brief overview of the Santo Stefano Fraction. Despite being a small reality, it offers several attractions of historical and artistic interest.
