Campobasso

Campobasso: a city rich in history and culture

Campobasso is a city located in the Molise region, of which it is the capital. With its population of about 47,182 inhabitants, it is the largest city in the region. The city is located on the hills between the Biferno and Fortore rivers and offers numerous historical testimonies from different periods.

The historic center

The historic center of Campobasso is a charming place that collects numerous historical and artistic testimonies. Among the main tourist attractions are the Church of San Leonardo, dating back to 1200, the Monforte Castle dating from the XV century and the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, in Neoclassic architecture. In 2018, the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities awarded Campobasso the title of village of notable historical interest.

The places of study

Campobasso is home to the University of Molise, which offers a wide range of degree and specialization courses. In addition, the city is home to the Archdiocese of Campobasso-Boiano and training schools such as the Carabinieri Academy and the State Police Academy.

Physical geography

The city is divided into two parts: the ancient part, of medieval origin, located on the slope of a hill dominated by the Monforte Castle and the modern and elegant part of the XIX century, located in the plain at the foot of the ancient center. The historic center is characterized by alleys and staircases, stone houses and buildings, portals decorated with noble coats of arms and internal courtyards. The modern city was designed according to the ideal of the garden city, with green spaces and fountains.

The climate

The climate of Campobasso is of the Apennine type. In winter, snowfalls often occur due to the influence of the southern Apennines, while summer is moderately cool and slightly humid thanks to the city's altitude. Autumn is characterized by frequent rains and an average temperature of about 12 degrees.

The origin of the name

The origin of the name "Campobasso" is not entirely clear, but it is thought to derive from "Campus Bassi", which means "Basso's field", from a Latin personal name such as "Bassus" or "Bassius". The hypothesis that the name derives from "campus vassorum", meaning the field of vassals, is not plausible, as the vassals were those who lived in the spaces surrounding the feudal lord's castles in the X-XI century.

In conclusion, visiting Campobasso means discovering a city with a rich history and culture, between ancient testimonies and modern green spaces. The cool climate and the authenticity of the landscape beauties make it an ideal place for a visit in the heart of Italy.
