Physical geography

Territory

The glacial origin of Campitello's territory makes it particularly suggestive and is characterized by the valley floor where the Avisio flows, which acts as a junction point with its tributaries, and is surrounded by the mountain crown. Like other centers in the valley, the village of Campitello was built on a Cone of Dejection (that of Ruf de Duron) located above the level of its main waterway, the Avisio. Campitello is located on the right bank of the valley and is crossed in its eastern part by the Rio Duron, which flows down from Val Duron. Its altitude is 1,448 meters.

Part of the center of Fontanazzo di sopra falls within the municipal territory, shared with Mazzin and located downstream of the capital, and Cercenà, a small hamlet located on the left bank of the Avisio and contiguous to Canazei. The hamlets of Pian and Fossel are located in the lower Val Duron.

Climate

The climate of Campitello, as well as that of the entire Fassa Valley, is characterized by a cold temperate climate. The average temperature during the warmest month, usually July, is 19°C, while in the coldest month, January, the average temperature drops to around -2°C. Rainfall is fairly constant, and precipitation is never absent, neither in winter nor in summer. The average over the year is 870 mm of rain.

Origin of the name

The name Campitello derives from the Ladino term "campus", which means "field". The toponym Campitello is a diminutive derived from the Ladino term.

History

The history of Campitello dates back to ancient times. In the locality of "Pian dei Crepèi", remains of ceramics dating back to the late Iron Age have been found, indicating the presence of men initially dedicated to pastoralism and later to agriculture. In Roman times, the whole territory was influenced by the new Roman colonization. During the High Middle Ages, it was controlled by the Prince-Bishops of Bressanone, favored by the presence of the nearby Novacella Abbey. The social structure of Campitello has historically been linked to its alpine origins, whose local customs and traditions have remained strong over time.

Since the 19th century, the predominant economic activity has been related to tourism and hospitality. A tragic event that affected the Campitello territory was the Vaia disaster, which hit northeastern Italy in the last days of October 2018, causing incalculable damage to the natural heritage.

Campitello di Fassa is a beautiful town to visit, with incredible landscapes and a rich history. It is worth visiting in every season of the year, to discover all its beauties and enjoy the hospitality of its inhabitants.
