Campiglia dei Berici

Welcome to Campiglia dei Berici

Hello everyone! Today we will talk about Campiglia dei Berici, a municipality in the province of Vicenza in Veneto, Italy. With its 1677 inhabitants, Campiglia is a small village characterized by an ancient history and interesting monuments. Let's discover more together!

Origin of the name

The name of the village derives from the Latin "campus", which means cultivated field or flat land. This tells us how the area was already used for agriculture in Roman times.

Campiglia dei Berici: history and monuments of an ancient Venetian town.

History

Campiglia has a very ancient history, dating back to the Middle Ages. During this period, the village was part of the vast "curtis" donated to the Vicenza Church by the kings Hugh of Provence and his son Lothair of Arles. The castle of the village was built by the bishops of Vicenza and was located to the north of the village, near the ancient parish church of San Pietro. In the thirteenth century, the Vicenza Church sold the castle and the entire village of Campiglia to the canons of the cathedral of Vicenza.

The castle of Campiglia was destroyed during the Paduan-Veronese struggles following the passing of Vicenza under the Scaliger rule in 1311. In the fourteenth century, the territory of Campiglia was administratively subject to the civil vicariate of Orgiano. In the sixteenth century, the village suffered extensive destruction.

Monuments and places of interest

Despite the destruction suffered throughout history, Campiglia preserves some interesting monuments. The ancient parish church dates back to the thirteenth century and was then rebuilt in 1679. Inside, you can admire a niche from the sixteenth century with a valuable altarpiece by Giambattista Tiepolo and a terracotta Madonna (mother of Jesus). The parish church of San Pietro was built in the last decade of the nineteenth century and completed in 1925. Finally, the Villa Repeta-Mocenigo-Bressan, built in 1672 on the ruins of the villa erected for Mario Repeta by Andrea Palladio.

Conclusions

Near the Bacchiglione River, Campiglia dei Berici is surrounded by suggestive hills that offer enchanting landscapes. In the village, you can take a pleasant walk through its streets, discovering curiosities about its ancient history and admiring its monuments. If you want to take a trip out of town, Campiglia is definitely an interesting destination that I recommend you visit.
