Campiglia Cervo

Campiglia Cervo: a merger of municipalities in Piedmont

Hello friends! Today I want to talk to you about Campiglia Cervo, a municipality of 522 inhabitants located in the province of Biella in Piedmont, Italy. Since 2016, Campiglia Cervo has been a new municipality created by the merger of the previous municipality (with the same name) with the former municipalities of Quittengo and San Paolo Cervo.

Physical geography

The territory of Campiglia Cervo is located on both sides of the Cervo stream, with a minimum altitude of about 600 meters in Bogna and a maximum altitude of 2,229 meters on Monte Tovo. The municipality also extends into the small valley bathed by the Rio degli Ondini, at the foot of Monte Mazzaro, and in the Concabbia valley, which descends towards the Cervo passing between the Forgnengo and Piaro fractions.

The capital and some of the main fractions are located on the hydrographic left side of the valley, which enjoys a more favorable exposure to the sun.

Origin of the name

The name Campiglia derives from the Latin word "campus", which means land suitable for cultivation. The Cervo stream, on the other hand, takes its name from the fact that it bathes the village.

History

The first information about Campiglia dates back to 1207, when a bull of Pope Innocent III mentioned the existence of a church dedicated to Saint Martin. In 1694, the Upper Cervo Valley became autonomous from Andorno Micca, and Campiglia became the capital of the valley.

In 1860-1870, the engineer Alessandro Mazzucchetti realized the Technical Vocational School of Construction and Road Construction in Campiglia, which was an important reference point for the entire Cervo Valley in the training of specialized labor in the construction sector. The school remained in operation for about a century and guaranteed the education and training of specialized labor for the area, as the male population emigrated to work on construction sites both in Italy and abroad.

In 1871, the Valle Cervo Workers' Mutual Aid Society was founded in Campiglia, which managed several activities to keep food prices low. Furthermore, it provided assistance to its members and their heirs in case of sickness or other needs.

Conclusions

Overall, Campiglia Cervo is a peaceful and picturesque municipality in Piedmont, with a rich and interesting history. The merger with neighboring municipalities has created a larger community, but the surrounding area remains predominantly rural with stunning natural beauty. If you are looking for a relaxing and peaceful place to visit in Italy, Campiglia Cervo could be the right choice!
