San Donnino

Welcome to San Donnino: a hamlet of Campi Bisenzio!

San Donnino is a hamlet located in the metropolitan city of Florence, in Tuscany. If you are looking for a tranquil location, away from the chaos of the city, then San Donnino is the right choice for you. The hamlet has ancient origins and developed around the churches of San Donnino a Campi and Chiesa di Sant'Andrea. In the past, San Donnino was an agricultural village, where straw and leather goods were produced. However, in the 1970s, the hamlet became known for the large incinerator built by the Florence municipality, which caused serious environmental and health problems for the population.

The history of San Donnino

San Donnino was severely tested in July-August 1944 during the passage of the front, when the inhabitants were forced to evacuate to Brozzi and the church of Sant'Andrea was partially destroyed. Later, San Donnino was submerged by the waters of the Arno during the Flood of Florence on November 4, 1966. In the 1970s, the hamlet was the focus of a major urban and environmental redevelopment action, thanks to the recovery of the area of a sand quarry, which is now a public park. However, despite the presence of the park, the hamlet continues to be affected by the presence of dioxin in the soil and in the properties of citizens.

The history and identity of San Donnino: a Tuscan hamlet between challenges and traditions.

The Chinese community

In the early 2000s, San Donnino was in the spotlight for the impressive Chinese immigration, favored by leather and packaging activities. The presence of about 2500 Chinese citizens represented a challenge for the municipal administration, which had to face various social problems. Thanks to the intervention of the new prior, Don Giovanni Momigli, and the support of the administration, the crisis was overcome and the Chinese community was distributed in other municipalities, mainly in Prato.

Monuments and points of interest

San Donnino also boasts the presence of the Fratellanza Popolare San Donnino, which offers socio-sanitary services to the community. Furthermore, the hamlet is known for its ancient churches, including San Donnino a Campi and Chiesa di Sant'Andrea. If you are looking for a peaceful walk, we recommend visiting the Chico Mendes park, which offers green spaces and panoramic walks.

The identity of San Donnino

In summary, San Donnino is a hamlet with an ancient history and a present rich in various challenges. However, the community has always come together to face difficulties and protect its territory. Today, San Donnino represents a peaceful and welcoming place, where traditions and origins are still deeply rooted in daily life.
