Arcille
Arcille: a characteristic hamlet of Tuscany
Arcille is a hamlet of the municipality of Campagnatico, in the Tuscan province of Grosseto. It is located in the southern area of the municipal territory, precisely on the plain of Sant'Antonio, a foothill area located at the eastern end of the Grosseto plain. This rural area is crossed by the Ombrone river and the Trasubbie stream. Bordering Istia d'Ombrone (and therefore the municipality of Grosseto), Marrucheti, Polveraia and Baccinello, and Preselle, the hamlet is about 12 km from the municipal capital and just over 13 km from Grosseto.
The history of Arcille
The name "Arcille" derives from small fortifications that already lined the road leading to Cinigiano in Roman times, marking the defense of travelers. In the course of the 20th century, after the reclamation of the Maremma plain and the 1951 agrarian reform, the hamlet developed as a center of services and aggregation for the farms and farmhouses scattered in the countryside around Trasubbie. Initially, the village should have been called "Sant'Antonio" because it was located on a land of the Sant'Antonio estate. The village was founded on December 29, 1954, with the laying of the first stone, and officially inaugurated on March 23, 1958, in the presence of the Minister of Agriculture Emilio Colombo. In 1955, the parish was established, dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, at the behest of Bishop Paolo Galeazzi. In addition to the name "Argille" - proposed by the bishop due to the richness of clay suitable for the production of bricks - time has also offered the discovery of truly unique fossils for the area: three ancestors of dugongs dating back to the Pliocene period.
The position of Arcille in geography
Arcille has a very interesting geographical position, as it is located in the Tuscan Maremma, a region with a historical and cultural past full of charm. The area in which the hamlet has developed is located between the plain of Grosseto and the hilly area. This is an open and flat territory that reflects the agricultural and rural traditions of Tuscany. The area is easily accessible from the nearby cities of Grosseto and Siena, but also from Rome, which is about two hours away by car. The proximity to the sea and the mountains - with the Apennine chain to the northeast and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the southwest - makes this area perfect for those seeking a holiday in nature and relaxation.
