Physical geography

Canepina is located on the slopes of Mount Cimino, the highest peak of the Cimini Mountains. The territory is characterized by a hilly and mountainous landscape, largely covered by chestnut, hazelnut, and olive groves. The presence of many watercourses, including the Ripa stream, makes the territory of Canepina very fertile. The majority of the village streets are paved with basaltic rocks, creating a suggestive atmosphere.

History

The history of the town dates back to the 11th century, when the Vico family built a castle on a hill to defend themselves from attacks on the Tiber plain. In 1154 the castle passed into the hands of St. Peter, and in 1332 to the Holy See. In 1544 Canepina became part of the new state created by Paul III, and remained there until 1649. During World War II, on June 5, 1944, the town was hit by an air raid that caused the death of 115 people.

Monuments and places of interest

Canepina offers several monuments and places of interest, including numerous churches. The main church of the town is the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, built in the Middle Ages but remodeled in the 15th and 16th centuries. Adjacent to the museum is the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, while the Church of Santa Corona, dedicated to the patron saint of the town, dates back to 1200. In addition, you can visit the Church of Madonna delle Grazie, dating back to the Renaissance period and attached to a steep slope, and the Church of San Giuseppe.

Among the civil buildings, the Palazzo Farnese stands out, built in the 16th century and currently housing the municipal offices, located in Piazza Garibaldi.
