The province of Macerata: a geographical description
The province of Macerata is one of the provinces of the Marche region, located in central Italy. With a population of over 300,000 inhabitants, the province is the largest in the region, occupying an area of over 2,700 square kilometers. The province borders the Adriatic Sea to the east and the province of Perugia, in Umbria, to the west. Since 2004, with the establishment of the province of Fermo, the province of Macerata is the only province in the Marche region that borders three other provinces.

Infrastructure and transportation
Before the advent of the automobile, the province of Macerata was crossed by numerous historic roads that led to Rome. Among these, the most important was the Via Lauretana, which connected Umbria and Marche before reaching the shrine of the Holy House in Loreto, the final destination for numerous pilgrims. With the arrival of trains, the province of Macerata saw the construction of the Rome-Ancona railway, which crossed the Fossato di Vico-Fabriano-Vall'Esina pass. This railway line directly connected the capital with the port of Ancona, passing through important cities such as Macerata, San Severino Marche, Tolentino, and Montecosaro. Camerino was connected to the main railway via the Castelraimondo-Camerino railway, now dismantled.
Today, the province of Macerata is well connected to the rest of the country thanks to its strategic location and modern infrastructure. The A14 and A16 highways make it easy to reach the north and south of Italy, while numerous bus and train lines connect the province with the main Italian cities and tourist destinations.
