Camerata Cornello
A Journey into the History of Camerata Cornello
Hello friends! Today I want to take you on a discovery of a small town in the province of Bergamo: Camerata Cornello. With its 565 inhabitants, this village stands out for its beauty and history. A place where ancient traditions and new initiatives merge together.
History
Origins
Like many other localities in the area, Camerata Cornello has ancient origins. It is believed that the first stable settlements date back to the time of barbarian invasions, when people sought refuge in remote places, protected from raiders. It is presumed that the inhabitants of the nearby Valsassina were the first to arrive, probably around the 6th century, as evidenced by the presence of some identical place names between the two areas.
Middle Ages
During the medieval period, the village was assigned to the Guelf and Ghibelline Visconti family. It is said that each person belonging to their faction was given the opportunity to kill a white and black Guelf. However, there are no documents that attest to any fights that happened on the communal soil.
During this period, the village became increasingly important thanks to the traffic passing through the town towards Valtellina, thanks to the Via Mercatorum. The village market became one of the most important in the whole area, causing disputes with the neighboring towns of Zogno and San Giovanni Bianco.
In 1428, the village became part of the Republic of Venice and was included in the administrative district of the Brembana valley. This ensured numerous privileges, but also began the construction of a new road, the Via Priula, which excluded the village from trade.
Modern Age
The Tasso family
The village gave birth to various members of the Tasso family. Omodeo de Tassis, in the 13th century, united some relatives in a group of couriers at the service of Venice. This nucleus consisted of 32 elements and was called "Compagnia dei Corrieri Veneti". Their ability to transport correspondence between Venice and the main Italian cities, especially Milan and Rome, made their fame grow, to the point of being official couriers of the Pope's correspondence.
Landmarks
Camerata Cornello
The village of Camerata Cornello is nestled on the right bank of the Brembo river. Thanks to its intact alpine landscape and its location, it boasts a splendid view of the valley. The historic center is picturesque and one of the most beautiful in the province of Bergamo. Among the historical buildings, we find in first position the parish church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, whose interior preserves valuable frescoes and murals of artistic value.
Tasso Palace
The presence of the Tasso family's palace in Camerata Cornello - now used as a reception structure - is important and particularly interesting because it has been redecorated with bright and traditional colors, moving away from the idea of an austere Renaissance structure.
Future projects
Camerata Cornello is projecting towards a dynamic and lively future through the realization of new initiatives, which aim at the well-being and tourism of the territory. Among these, the arrival of an adventure park, the renovation of the thermal station, the modernization of reception structures, and the enhancement of hiking trails that lead to the discovery of enchanting woods and landscapes.
I bid you farewell and invite you to visit Camerata Cornello, a place where history merges with the present and future, creating a unique and fascinating reality.
