Camerano

Welcome to Camerano, an underground town

Hello everyone! Today I will tell you some interesting facts about the Municipality of Camerano, a town located in the province of Ancona, in the Marche region. Camerano has 7,108 inhabitants and its territory covers approximately 19.81 km². There are some hamlets, such as Aspio Terme, Colle Lauro and San Germano, which offer breathtaking views and interesting tourist activities.

But the real attraction of Camerano is beneath our feet: the "Underground City" or "Caves of Camerano". This underground area is a labyrinth of tunnels excavated in sandstone and runs under the historic center. It is possible to visit the caves and admire their architectural embellishments such as bas-reliefs, dome, sail and barrel vaults, circular rooms and columns of particular architectural taste. We are still uncertain about the origin of these caves, but oral tradition suggests that they are very ancient.

The History of Camerano

Camerano has a very ancient history. The first prehistoric settlements date back to the Copper Age (3rd millennium BC). Later, more than a hundred Picene tombs were found in the San Giovanni district. This suggests that the origin of the caves is to be traced back to a very ancient period.

During the Roman period, the inhabited center lost importance and people moved to the countryside. In the Middle Ages, there was a revitalization of the town, which led to the current configuration of the historic center. Camerano is also famous for its Picene necropolis, dating back to the 11th century BC to the 3rd century BC, which includes more than a hundred tombs.
