Camairago is a small town located in the municipality of Castelgerundo, in the province of Lodi, of which it is the headquarters. The village has an ancient history and has been inhabited since the early Middle Ages. Below you will find a brief guide to Camairago.
History
Camairago has a very ancient history, it belonged to the Archbishop of Milan Ariberto d'Intimiano and the Visconti. In 1440 the Borromeo family rebuilt the castle, after the destruction caused by the communal struggle between Milan and Lodi. It was fortified by Marco Antonio Colonna in 1521 and suffered the occupation of the Lanzichenecchi directed to Mantua in 1621. In the Napoleonic era, from 1809 to 1816, it was a geographic fraction of Cavacurta, regaining autonomy with the constitution of the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom. The ancient name, from the early Middle Ages, was "Camariaco", which derives from Camerte Camairago, the supposed founder. In 2017 it merged with the municipality of Cavacurta.
Symbols
The coat of arms and the banner of Camairago were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on September 4, 1997.
Monuments and places of interest
The village of Camairago preserves the castle of the Borromeo family, built on a pre-existing medieval fortress and the Sanctuary of Madonna della Fontana (Castelgerundo) erected in antiquity to the Virgin Mary. Here you can admire a source, still existing, of miraculous water that in the past has healed cripples and sick people.

Economy
Agriculture represents the main local economic activity, thanks to the cultivation of corn and fodder and the breeding of pigs and cattle. Although some of these agricultural companies have a certain size, notable is the commuting to Milan and other centers. The presence of industrial activities is almost absent, but there are some craft businesses.
