Fibbialla
The Fraction of Fibbialla
Hello! Today I will talk to you about a fraction of the Lucca province, Fibbialla (also known as Fibbialla de 'Canonici). I hope to give you all the information you need to understand what there is to see in this ancient and historically peculiar village.
Physical Geography
Fibbialla is located on a hill over 270 meters above sea level. It is about 20 km from the municipal center of Camaiore and less than 15 km from Lucca. The fraction is surrounded by natural Tuscan beauties and consists of the hamlets of Corolla and Pretale. In particular, it is located east of the summit of Monte Ghilardona, which has a height of approximately 450 m.
History
Fibbialla has ancient origins dating back to the Roman era. In fact, it was first documented in the libraries of the bishop of Lucca in 892 as "Flabbianula", a nickname that derives from the Latin Flavianus and means "land of Flavio". In the 12th century, Fibbialla intersected in the "Jura of the Canons" of the cathedral of Lucca. It was fortified by the Ronaldinghi with the construction of the castle in 1123. Starting from 1270, Fibbialla was the jurisdiction of the podesteria of Massarosa. Unfortunately, in 1313, the castle was destroyed by the troops of the Pisan Uguccione della Faggiola. After the siege, it returned to the possession of the Canons of San Martino, remaining under the jurisdiction of the Chapter until 1799, a period in which the French general Serrurier abolished the rights of the "Jura": Fibbialla became, therefore, part of the Municipality of Lucca. With the creation of the Principality of Lucca and Piombino in the early 19th century, Fibbialla was associated with the municipality of Camaiore with the establishment of the Littorale District.
Monuments and Places of Interest
Walking around Fibbialla, you will be struck by several architectural wonders, starting from the church of San Pietro. This building was first mentioned in a document from 1260 and then enlarged and renovated in the second half of the nineteenth century. Furthermore, you cannot fail to notice the castle of Fibbialla, a historic and national fortification disappeared, which today survives only in the remains of the tower structure known as the "cisternaccio". Finally, you might also come across the Pretale mill, an ancient 19th-century mill located in the valley below the fraction, which unfortunately is now in a state of abandon.
