Calvignasco

Calvignasco: a unique town

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Calvignasco, a town located in the metropolitan city of Milan in Lombardy. One interesting fact that might make you smile is that this town is one of the flattest municipalities in Italy, alongside Alzano Scrivia in the province of Alessandria. In fact, the maximum difference in altitude in the town is only 1 meter!

The history of Calvignasco

Calvignasco is located on the edge of the province of Pavia, between Rosate and the city of Casorate Primo. The municipality is made up of three hamlets: Betolla, where the town hall is located, Ponte, and Calvignasco. Its history is closely linked to that of Binasco for centuries, to the point that it is not easy to find relevant documents that talk about its individuality. In the past, the town was part of the fiefdom of Moncucco (Vernate), which was feudalized to the Visconti di Fontaneto family, and previously to the Corte di Masino.

The symbols of Calvignasco

Calvignasco has an ancient emblem consisting of a split and a band. The two azure bands that cross the emblem seem to allude to the Naviglio di Bereguardo and the Naviglio Pavese, rivers that flow within the municipality's territory.

Monuments

The Church of San Michele is the main place of worship in the town and has been dedicated to the archangel for centuries. The current building was rebuilt starting from 1605, when Cardinal Federico Borromeo visited the church and found it too small. The church is part of the prepositurate of Casorate Primo, while the hamlet of Bettola is under the jurisdiction of the prepositurate of Rosate.

Society in Calvignasco

Looking at the demographic evolution, we can see how the population of the town has grown over the centuries. In 1751 there were 202 residents, while in 1859 the population was 511 people. According to ISTAT data from 2010, there were 72 foreign residents in the town. The most represented nationalities were Moroccans (1.76%) and Romanians (1.59%).

Administration

The mayor of Calvignasco is Giuseppe Gandini, assisted by the deputy mayor Emilio Felice Bossi and the external councilor Mariella Rubinelli. The town council is composed of Emilio Leo, Giusi Perdonò, Marco Gammino, Giulia Radici, Pietro Pogliani, and Stefano Pandini.

Conclusion

Here, my friends, is an overview of Calvignasco, a quiet town that has retained the salient features of its history and its administrative management. If you happen to be in the area, don't miss the Church of San Michele, an ancient treasure that enriches the urban landscape of this beautiful territory.
