Origins of the name

The meaning of the toponym Calvene is uncertain, but it is thought to derive from the Latin term "clavis," which means "key that leads towards the mountain." Alternatively, it could refer to an important family in Roman times residing in the area.

History

Ancient times

During excavations for the construction of the former Fascist Party headquarters, Roman coins from the Republican and Imperial age were found, along with other objects of historical and archaeological interest.

Middle Ages

The first certain news of Calvene dates back to 914, while in medieval documents it is mentioned with different spellings such as "Clavenis, Calvennis, Calvenum, Calvenna." In 1071, a certain Giusto, son of Martino, donated his properties located in Calvene to the Paduan convent of Santo Stefano. Furthermore, in 917, the area between the left bank of the Astico and the right bank of the Brenta, including the Asiago Plateau, was donated by Emperor Berengario del Friuli to Bishop Sibicone of Padua with the obligation to build castles and defensive works against the raids of the Hungarians.
