History

Caltignaga is an ancient locality dating back to the Roman domination era. Throughout the centuries, it was the scene of several conflicts between local lords. In the Middle Ages, the castles of Caltignaga and Morghengo were fortified and hosted the noble families of the area. In the 17th century, the church of the Patronage was built in Morghengo and the church of San Rocco in Caltignaga. Today, these and many other historical landmarks can be visited as places of tourist interest.

Monuments and places of interest

Religious architecture

Caltignaga is the ideal place for lovers of sacred art. The church of the Patronage, located in Morghengo, is an example of 17th-century religious architecture. The church of San Martino, also in Morghengo, dates back to the 10th-11th century and is built in Romanesque style. The church of San Rocco, in Caltignaga, was built between the 17th and 18th century. The church of Sant'Abramo and the parish church of Santa Margherita in Sologno are definitely worth a visit for their history and architectural beauty. Finally, the former Romanesque church of San Lupo and the church of the Saints Nazzaro and Celso in Sologno represent two examples of 9th-11th-century Romanesque architecture.

Civil architecture

If you are interested in archaeology, you cannot miss the Roman aqueduct located between Caltignaga and Novara. This structure was discovered during archaeological excavations carried out from the 60s. Along 1800 meters, it probably served for the water supply of the city of Novara. The Castello di Mirasole farmhouse, the castle of Caltignaga, and the castle of Morghengo are three examples of military architecture that tell the power struggles between the various local lords.

From a demographic point of view, Caltignaga boasts a high birth rate and a welcoming and supportive community. Its economy is mainly based on agriculture and the trade of local products.
