Caloveto
Welcome to Caloveto
Hello friends! Today we're taking you on a journey to discover a little-known corner of Calabria, rich in history and natural beauty: the municipality of Caloveto. Located in the province of Cosenza, with its 1,186 inhabitants, it's a small village overlooking the Trionto River, 385 meters above sea level. The local economy is mainly based on agriculture, making the territory very fertile.
The origin of the name
The name Caloveto comes from the Greek words "kalyvites," which means "inhabitants of huts." This name pays homage to the first Calabrian monks who settled in the area in the 9th century.
History
The village of Caloveto is built on the ruins of an acemetes monastery (which called for the solitary life of monks) dedicated to Saint John Calibita, a Byzantine monk who, having retired to a hermit's life, lived in the same cave where the church dedicated to the saint stands today. On this rocky terrain, the monks lived here for many years, dedicating themselves mainly to the cultivation of fruit and vegetables, which soon became the community's main activity.
The village of Caloveto was built around the monastery of Saint John Calibita, and when the monastic community died out in the 13th century, it was inhabited by farmers who added animal husbandry to the agriculture. Over the centuries, Caloveto was in ruins and rebuilt several times, under the dominion of the Sangineto, Sant'Angelo, Ruffo di Montalto, Guindazzo, Cavaniglia, d’Aragona dukes of Montalto, Mandatoriccio, and finally, Sambiase, Princes of Campana.
In 1799, as a result of the administrative reorganization ordered by General Championnet, Caloveto was included in the Canton of Cirò. In 1807, it became a place and was included in the Government of Cariati, and then declared a Municipality with the law of 4/5/1811 and included in the Cropalati District. In 1928, it was downgraded to a fraction of Cropalati until 1934 when it was re-established as an autonomous municipality.
Symbols of Caloveto
The coat of arms of the municipality of Caloveto was granted by the decree of the President of the Republic on September 11, 1996. The coat of arms is represented by a shield divided into four parts: the first depicts the gear wheel representing the industry, the second depicts a pineapple representing the particular type of cultivation present in the territory of Caloveto. The third part is characterized by the image of Saint John Calibita, the founder of the monastery, while the last is occupied by the clouds in which is the inscription "Municipality of Caloveto."
