Boscone Cusani

A historic village

Boscone Cusani is a village located on the right bank of the Po River, about ten kilometers from the capital of Piacenza province, in Emilia-Romagna. The area is one of the few to have played a crucial role in medieval history, between 990 and 994, with the crossing of the river by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Sigeric. In the 18th century, a group of Albanian refugees settled in the area, while during the 19th century the village suffered the effects of the Po River flood in 1812, which led to the construction of the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi.

A church dedicated to San Francesco d'Assisi

The Church of San Francesco d'Assisi stands where initially there was an oratory, erected in 1752. In 1823, with the establishment of the parish, the construction of the current church began, which was consecrated in 1827. In 1890, the bell tower was erected, while a renovation work affected the building between 1909 and 1910, when a new neo-Romanesque facade was built, designed by Amilcare Marchesi. The church has a central entrance framed by a lunette with a bas-relief depicting San Francesco d'Assisi, while on the facade there is a twin window in a semicircular arch.

Boscone Cusani: history and nature in Emilia-Romagna

A territory marked by war

During World War II, the area was the scene of several clashes between partisan groups and occupying German forces. Near Boscone Cusani, there was a German ferry that suffered numerous attacks by Italian partisans. The area saw the presence of the Bruzzi Malatesta brigades, and among their members were twelve residents of Boscone. Today, the remains of that historical period can still be admired in the area, which has tried to preserve the memory of the events that took place.

A welcoming village

Boscone Cusani is a welcoming village surrounded by nature, immersed in a territory of ancient fascination. The Church of San Francesco d'Assisi, the presence of Albanian refugees in the 18th century, and the clashes during World War II, are just some of the historical events that have marked the territory, keeping alive the memory of its history.
