Calendasco: nature, history, and Francigena routes.

The history of Calendasco

The name Calendasco has ancient and uncertain origins. According to historian Pier Maria Campi, the name would derive from the alleged founder of the village in Roman times, ''Calendius''. Other studies identify the toponym as of Celtic origin, with the original meaning of ''place near a forest''.

The Calendasco area has been inhabited since prehistoric times; the presence of human settlements is proven by some findings, including seven daggers dating back to the Copper Age, found in a quarry near a furnace.

During the Roman era, the ''Ad Padum'' mansio develops in Calendasco on the consular road ''Placentia-Ticinum'', which connected Piacenza to Pavia. At this time, an important river port also develops, serving the city of Piacenza.
