This municipality has also been a market town since 1657, demonstrating its importance since the early Middle Ages.

The lake is also the largest body of water in the autonomous province of Bolzano and can reach a maximum depth of about 6 meters. During the winter, it becomes a fabulous place for ice skating.

The name Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino probably derives from the Latin word "caldaria", which means "boiler". The toponym was first attested in the so-called Vigilius letter of the 9th century, and since 1964, the name of the municipality was changed by adding the specification "sulla Strada del Vino", together with other towns in Alto Adige.

The historical center of Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino presents an architectural style typical of Oltradige, a mixture of Northern European Gothic and Southern Renaissance. The noble residences of the 17th century were built in this architectural style, and are now protected as historic monuments. To document the importance of the village since the early Middle Ages, in 1439 the existence of its own surface right of Caldaro and Termeno was attested, as "usus et consuetudo terre Caldary et cappelle Trameni". In Caldaro, moreover, there are the offices of the cadastral table system and of the cadastre.

In an agreement with the province of Bolzano, a new shooting range will be built at the municipal border of Caldaro and Vadena on the 16-hectare area of the "Tettoni" barracks, replacing the previous one at the San Maurizio hospital in Bolzano.
