Montemagno is located at an altitude of 114 meters above sea level on the southern foothills of Monte Serra of the Monti Pisani, along the valley of the Zambra di Montemagno stream. The hamlet is just over 2 kilometers away from the municipal center of Calci and about 13 kilometers from Pisa.
History
The history of Montemagno is very ancient, as its foundation dates back to the high-medieval era. Initially, the village consisted of a small chapel dedicated to Saint Gregory the Great. Only later were the two parish churches of Santa Maria and San Martino built. Over the centuries, Montemagno has undergone several invasions and raids, but despite this, the village has always managed to remain independent. In 1884, it passed under the municipality of Calci. Furthermore, it is interesting to know that Montemagno gave birth to the 167th Pope of the Catholic Church, Eugenius III, who is recognized and venerated as Blessed.
Monuments and Places of Interest
The Church of Santa Maria ad Nives is the main parish church of Montemagno and is considered one of the main monuments of the hamlet. Its construction dates back to 1179 and is in the Romanesque style. The Tragic Fire of 2018
The hamlet of Montemagno was hit by an arson fire between September 24th and 27th, 2018. The tragedy destroyed about 1400 hectares of forest and damaged some isolated houses on the mountain ridge. This event has led citizens and local authorities to strengthen safety measures and work together to prevent future incidents.
