La Gabella: A Fraction of Tuscany

Hello everyone! Today I’ll talk about Gabella, a fraction located in the municipality of Calci, in the province of Pisa, in Tuscany.

Physical Geography

Gabella is a village located in the plain, on the right bank of the Zambra di Calci stream. It extends along the provincial road 30 of the Lungomonte Pisano that connects San Giuliano Terme with Calci, passing through Asciano Pisano and Agnano. The fraction is located at the western limit of the Val Graziosa di Calci and is located below the small height of the Spuntone (242 m). To the southwest of Gabella, the watercourses of the fossa Vecchia (6 km) and the fosso della Vicinaia (8 km) flow.

Gabella borders on the east with the municipal capital of Calci, to the south with Caprona, a fraction of Vicopisano, to the southwest with Mezzana (San Giuliano Terme) and to the northwest with Agnano (San Giuliano Terme). The village is just over 1 km from the municipal capital and about 9 km from Pisa.

Gabella: Tuscan village between nature and history.

History

The fraction of Gabella has an ancient history. It was born near a lost locality which was formerly known as Vicascio, a parish in the early Middle Ages with the title of San Pietro. Gabella took its name from the Gabella that its position at the center of the valley guaranteed. Over the centuries, the fraction has undergone various transformations and modifications.

During the 1990s, Gabella underwent a major urbanization. A large residential area, the largest in the municipality, was built, which significantly increased its population: in 2001 the fraction had 857 inhabitants, and ten years later, at the 2011 census, they had reached 1223 units.
