Football: Tuscan gem between history and natural beauty.

Physical Geography

Territory

Calci was a part of the Pisan Community and the City of Pisa during the early years of the Kingdom of Italy, but since 1867 it has been an autonomous town. With the annexation of the districts of Montemagno and Rezzano, the jurisdictional territory has remained unchanged, located in the "Valle Graziosa" and the two neighboring valleys of Crespignano and Vicascio. The surface area of the territory is just over 25 km², with the highest altitude reaching 917 meters above sea level at the summit of "Cima alla Taneta" or Monte Serra.

Climate

Calci belongs to the D climatic zone, with low atmospheric diffusivity. Its seismicity is low, as determined by the Regional Government.

Origin of the Name

It is believed that the name Calci derives from the Latin language. The toponym "locus Calcis" was the primitive onomastic attribution of the valley, as the foot or heel of the mountain made the area very picturesque. Its geological structure is ancient and has nothing to do with lime, which was instead found along the coast. The church of Saints Giovanni and Ermolao, in Pisan Romanesque style, is the center of the valley, around which the urban center of La Pieve, the district capital, developed.

History

Calci was previously a group of villages that developed during the era of the Pisan Republic around the castle of the Pisan Bishop, owner of the valley. The villages were distributed along the courses of the main streams, the Zambre, to draw water for the Concia and power the water wheels of mills and hammers. Olive farming was very important, as it provided high-quality olive oil, while the zambra was used to produce hydraulic energy for the "arte bianca," one of the most important textile productions in the country.
