Caiolo Aviosuperficie: An Option for Air Transportation in Lombardy

If you're looking for an alternative to ground transportation in Lombardy, the Caiolo Aviosuperficie might be the right choice for you. Located in the province of Sondrio, this facility has a 1050 meter-long runway within a 240,000 sqm area, and is used for commercial flights and public passenger transportation. In this article, we will explore the features of the aviosuperficie, its history, and its certification by ENAC.

Facility

The Caiolo Aviosuperficie has a runway of 1050 meters made of asphalt and several aircraft parking areas. Moreover, it has three prefabricated reinforced concrete hangars and outdoor parking areas, which make it suitable for all types of planes. Additionally, there is a designated area for helicopter rescue and forest firefighting, covering the Central Alps.

History

In the 1980s, Caiolo was identified as an ideal territory for the construction of the aviosuperficie, and three years later a convention was signed between the municipality of Caiolo and Aviovaltellina SpA. Construction work began soon after, thanks also to the interest of Credito Valtellinese, and in 1987 the facility was opened to traffic.

1987 was also the year of the Valtellina flood tragedy, and the aviosuperficie was used as a base for rescue operations. In the 1990s, additional enhancement works were carried out, including the construction of a base for helicopter rescue and forest firefighting, capable of serving the Central Alps. In 2002, the runway was extended from 900 to 1050 meters, and further work was done on the entire structure.

Since 2003, the administration has been in the hands of Don Caio, who has contributed to increasing the visibility of the aviosuperficie on a national and international level.

ENAC certification

In 2006, ENAC certified the Caiolo Aviosuperficie for passenger traffic, under the condition that the planes used should have a maximum of 8 passengers, two pilots, and a weight not exceeding 5,700 kg. Thanks to this certification, the aviosuperficie can now offer scheduled flights and passenger transportation services.
