Solbiate con Cagno: a new Lombardian municipality

On January 1, 2019, a new municipality was established in Lombardy: Solbiate con Cagno. This new municipality was created by the merger of the municipalities of Solbiate and Cagno, both located in the Alto Olgiatese area of the province of Como.

The proposal to merge the municipalities of Solbiate and Cagno was approved on June 10, 2018, by a popular referendum. Since then, the two municipalities have been collaborating to join forces and create a larger and more efficient municipality.

Solbiate con Cagno includes three main inhabited centers: Cagno, Concagno, and Solbiate, which is also the municipal seat. There are also several inhabited localities, including Brughiera, Casale Casa Rossa, Cascina Paradiso, and Cascina Piella.

Infrastructure and transport

Railways

From 1885 to 1966, the Como-Varese railway of the Ferrovie Nord Milano was in operation, which had a station in the Solbiate fraction (the Solbiate-Albiolo station) together with the municipality of Albiolo. The railway was electrified in 1948, but was definitively suppressed in 1966.

Administration

The administration of the new municipality of Solbiate con Cagno is still in the consolidation phase. The first mayor of the municipality was elected in 2019, after the merger of the two municipalities.
