Caerano di San Marco

Welcome to Caerano di San Marco!

Hello everyone! Let me introduce you to Caerano di San Marco, a municipality in the province of Treviso in Veneto, Italy, with a population of approximately 7,787 people. In this summary, we will discover a little more about the physical geography of the territory, the climate that characterizes it, and its ancient history.

The physical geography of the territory

The territory of Caerano di San Marco is mostly flat, with altitudes ranging from 91 m above sea level to 144 m above sea level. However, one of its symbols is a small hill called Montelletto, located in the northeast of the municipality, also known as the ''Rive di Caerano''. The area is very poor in watercourses, but since ancient times, the system of artificial canals derived from the Piave has ensured the water supply. In particular, the Canale di Caerano, better known as Brentella, is a branch of the Brentella di Pederobba, and continues to ensure the presence of water in the territory.

Caerano di San Marco: geography, climate, and ancient history.

The climate of the municipality

The climate of Caerano di San Marco is subcontinental, with very hot and humid summers. Intense thunderstorms often occur, accompanied by hail and occasionally tornadoes. Winters are cold, occasionally dropping below freezing with frosts. Snowfalls are not very frequent, and the snow cover generally does not exceed 10 centimeters.

The history of Caerano di San Marco

The territory of Caerano di San Marco has been inhabited since prehistoric times. In the Rive, in recent years, remains of tools and material in terracotta or clay have been found, attributable to Homo neanderthalensis. Other finds in the same location testify to the passage of Homo sapiens. However, the traces of the Paleoveneti are very scarce, despite the proximity of Montebelluna, an important settlement of this ancient population.

Regarding the Roman period, the finds are few, probably because much of the area was not colonized or cultivated, but remained linked to the castrum of Montebelluna with purely military functions. However, a sarcophagus found in 1961 in Lavaggio, and now kept in the Civic Museum Luigi Bailo, can be dated to the Severan Dynasty and belong to a freedman of Greek origin and his consort.

From the high-medieval period, we do not have much information regarding Caerano. However, it is plausible that the locality was influenced by the events that involved the surrounding territory, such as the invasion of the Hungarians in the 9th-10th century who attacked the castle of Montebelluna.

The first mention of Caerano di San Marco is contained in a notarial deed of January 27th, 1148, in which a "peciam unam de terra in villa de Cairano, supra ripam" was exchanged between the Bishop of Treviso Gregorio and the Dean of the Canons Lodovico. The oldest attestation of the Chapel of San Marco, which gave its name to the village, is instead from 1297, located just north of the atrium of the existing parish church, where the original nucleus of Caerano stood.

Between the 13th and 14th centuries, in the documents of the area, many references are found to minor localities such as Lavaggio, le Rive, and Campagna, whose toponyms are still in use.

Conclusions

I hope that this brief overview of the municipality of Caerano di San Marco has been useful to get to know this territory of Veneto, whose symbol is the Montelletto, also known as the ''Rive di Caerano''. The water supply of the municipality is ensured by the Canale di Caerano, better known as Brentella, and the climate is subcontinental. Moreover, its history dates back to the prehistoric era, with finds attributable to Homo neanderthalensis, and subsequently, it was involved in the historical events of the surrounding territory.
