The Terrò stream, which runs through the town, originates from the moraine hills between Capiago Intimiano and Alzate Brianza and receives the waters of three tributaries: the Valletta, the Valle di Mezzo, and the Roggia Vecchia. The semi-continental climate offers cold winters and hot summers, with precipitation ranging from 800 to 1000 mm per year. The territory of Cabiate is characterized by the presence of a natural cavity, the depression in which the settlement developed, which is the origin of the name "caveatum."
Origin of the Name
The name Cabiate derives from the Vulgar Latin "caveatum" and refers to the natural cavity in which the village developed, similar to the "cavea" of the Roman theater. The suffix -ate emphasizes its Celtic derivation. The first historical records of the town date back to 745, in the sale of land, where it was identified in the document with the name of ''Vico Capiate.''

The Woods of the Groane Park

The Terrò Stream
The Terrò Stream runs through the town at an altitude of about 230 meters and receives the waters of three small tributaries: the Valletta, the Valle di Mezzo, and the Roggia Vecchia. The first creek originates in the woods between Mirabello and Figino Serenza and descends to Cabiate through the territory of Mariano Comense, where it is called the Valle del Boscaccio, inside the Brughiera Briantea Park; the second originates in the southern part of Figino Serenza and marks for a long stretch the natural boundary between the provinces of Milan and Como; the third, finally, originates from the springs of the Fontana del Guercio in Carugo and flows into the Terrò in Mariano.
The Borromea Canal
Until the 1960s, the territory of Cabiate was also crossed by the Borromea Canal, an artificial channel that originated from the Fontana del Guercio in Carugo and served to feed the fountains of the gardens of Palazzo Arese Borromeo in Cesano Maderno. The channel was eventually dismantled with the industrial development of the Porada area.
