This town, located in the lower Susa valley, is part of the metropolitan city of Turin in Piedmont. With its 6,373 inhabitants, it offers stunning scenery thanks to its hilltop position on the right hydrographic side moraine of the Rivoli-Avigliana Amphitheatre.
History
Buttigliera Alta was closely linked to the Carron family until the last descendant, Clementina Carron, passed away in April 1912. In 1890, Alfonso and Giuliano Vandel were searching for a suitable place for their new nail production plant and chose Buttigliera. Their new fraction, Ferriera, named after the town of ''La Ferriere Sous Jougne'', made the place famous, where FIAT then established one of its metallurgical plants in 1917.
Symbols
The town of Buttigliera Alta has a beautiful coat-of-arms granted by royal decree on August 3, 1930. The municipal banner, instead, was granted by royal decree on March 8, 1934, and is a blue cloth.
Monuments and places of interest
Buttigliera Alta is rich in monuments and places of interest. One of the most important is the Abbey of Sant'Antonio di Ranverso, which contains a church from 1121 and a grain mill donated by the monks in 1188. In addition, a live Nativity scene is set up every year. The Church of San Marco Evangelista is instead the parish church of the town and was built between 1653 and 1673.
Society
In the last fifty years, the population of Buttigliera Alta has doubled. Currently, there are also foreign citizens living in the town; as of December 31, 2017, there were 339, mainly of Romanian and Moroccan nationality.
Culture
The Ida Carlini Municipal Library was founded in 1976 and has been part of the Pinerolo Intercompensorial Library System since 1982. In 2010, it became part of the SBAM, in the Northwest pole. Its name is in honor of a local teacher active in cultural education.
